Plein Air Painting At Cram Gardens, Kenilworth Lake
Had a spectacular time this morning painting at the gorgeous Cram Gardens in Asheville. Hosted by Blue Spiral Gallery, 50 or so plein air painters enjoyed a beautiful morning and 80 degree temps to hike the estate and select one of a million lovely places to paint. Hope to go back again soon!

Recently Sold - 2 Days Ago
Catherine Twomey sold a 24" x 36" print of da Vinci Horse in Piaffe.
da Vinci Horse in Piaffe
Commissioned for the cover of the "United States Dressage Federation" magazine Connections, it was inspired by "The Vitruvian Man" by Leaonardo da Vinci circa 1487. This could be considered the "Canon of Proportions" for the horse performing the dressage movement piaffe. It is based on the correlations of ideal horse proportions with geometry. It exemplifies the blend of art and science during the Renaissance.
Winning painting/illustration of the American Horse Publications Annual Awards, First Place in Illustration for "Da Vinci Horse", 2007. This print shows an anatomically accurate transparent horse and skeleton.
"Point Reyes National Seashore No. 2", C. Twomey Original Work In Progress
18 X 24” on gessoboard; acrylic and mixed media.
The way the mist would flow in from the Pacific, up the dunes and over the hills set such a mood. This cove had fighting sea lions and hundreds of species of birds that I couldn't begin to identify. Whenever I have a bad day (today, unfortunately) this is where my mind goes.
May 25 & 26, 2019 - Kenilworth Art Studio Tour!

SpaceX Launch No.1, Unmanned or Unwomaned, March, 2019, 2:49 a.m.
12X12”, acrylic on archival board, available.
I was supposed to go to the launch but it got complicated with the timing and the dogs, so my husband went. It was wonderful to experience the launch vicariously and watch the launches video stream.
Good grief, the power, the sound, the blinding light. That hundreds of people would be there at 2 - something in the morning was just incredible. The flight will be manned in July; maybe I’ll try again.
From SpaceX:
”At 2:49 a.m. EST on March 2, SpaceX launched Crew Dragon’s first demonstration mission from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This test flight without crew on board the spacecraft is intended to demonstrate SpaceX’s capabilities to safely and reliably fly astronauts to and from the International Space Station as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.”
"Roadside USA" Exhibition Pieces In Mesa, AZ Museum
“Limantour Beach Estuary, Point Reyes, CA” about 10:00 am, tide slowly coming in.
I pleased to say that three of my works have been selected to appear in an exhibition at the IDEA Museum in Mesa,, AZ. The exhibit is focused on families, showing how artists go to all sorts of different places around the country to paint their reaction to the world. The exhibition will run from June, 2019 until Oct. 2019.
"The Edge of the Earth" by C. Twomey
12 X 12” on archival canvas
Took a break from my contemporary realism painting retreat to create this Manifesto Series piece. “The Edge of the Earth” is just that; a commentary on whether we are on the earth’s edge, or not. I plan to finish this up when I get home soon.
"The Bridge of Lions, A Sentinel" C. Twomey Original Art
One of the first sunny days I landed in St. Augustine, I grabbed my easel and painted this noble guard. There are four lions guarding the bridge; they’re made of imported Carerra marble and are stunning in their majesty. This sketch took about two hours.
"North Beach, Early Morning" C. Twomey Original
12 X 16” acrylic on canvas board. Available.
This plein air painting was a joy to do. I set up early and within an hour was surrounded by friendly people from Indiana, Quebec, Minnesota…..I loved the angles of the beach, waves and dunes here, so that is what I focused on. I’ll be able to shoot this with better lighting when I get home next week - this is a bit pink.
"St. Augustine Blue On Blue Door" C. Twomey
Cannot complain about a day spent wandering around this ancient town, then finding this extraordinary doorway. Oh the secrets it could tell! The striking blue, oranges, yellows and whitewashed wall were wonderfully complaint as I painted away. St. Augustine was founded in 1565, and apparently there are a lot of mysteries around town.
"St. Augustine Courtyard Guardian Doors" C. Twomey
12 X 20”, acrylic on archival canvas.
One of the most intriguing things about St. Augustine is its history. Throughout the city there are ancient, original doors guarding homes, gardens, courtyards and businesses. I wonder - how long have these beautiful doors been guarding this courtyard? 300 years? More?
"Coquina Beach, Waves and Sun" by C. Twomey
12X12” archival canvas, Work In Progress.
Making some progress on this piece. Studying waves is a science unto itself, but very interesting and challenging. And that turquoise!
"Buck Mountain Vineyards" SOLD, Thanks To The Collector!
Very grateful to the collector of this artwork! This 15”X18” print was sold to a fine person from Parker, Colorado.
The original was a plein air painting done along Buck Mountain Road near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.

"Two Palms, Coquina Beach, Early Morning" Sold, C. Twomey
Thank you very much to the collector from Tallahasse! This plein air painting was recently completed at one of my favorite spots along the gulf. The shade spots disappeared as the morning went on, so I painted the early and reflexively. So many wonderful people stopped by to say hello and offer to pose! There are a lot of nice people in the world.
"St. Augustine, Aviles Street, Stained Glass Doorway" C. Twomey
12X12”, acrylic and mixed media on archival board.
Aviles St. in this old (1565!) town of St. Augustine is full of ancient doors and doorways of all shapes and sizes. This one in particular drew my attention - the colors, the shadows, the sunlight - all combined into a wonderful composition just begging to be painted.
